“LORD OF THE FLIES” AND REPORTED SPEECH
Aims: to give students further practice on Reported Speech
Level: Intermediate/Upper-intermediate/Advanced
Organisation: Groups of three
Preparation: Handouts containing 10 sentences selected from the fragment in the textbook. Make sure the sentences use Direct Speech.
Time: 10 minutes
Procedure: Students are asked to play “The Deaf Old Man”. One student reads a sentence. Another one asks: ’What did he say?’ The third student rephrases the sentence using Reported Speech.
e.g.
A: We need a fire.
B: What? What did he say?
C: He said they needed a fire.
A: We won’t be rescued if we don’t build a fire to be seen from a distance.
B: What did he say?
C: He said they wouldn’t be rescued if they didn’t build a fire to be seen from a distance.
